14. Australia And The Aborigines

At the end of June, 1973 we went on tour across Australia. The flight was long, almost 24 hours. This time Randy too flied for the company, he then has already grown enough so he could from time to time participate to in concerts.

We were expected with crowd of journalists. The camera flashes started to sparkle, and they have thrown questions at us while the crowd of fans tried to get an autograph. But there was too much of them, and we did not have time. We had to go to hotel to prepare for the concert.

The next evening a party in our honour has been arranged, there were many influential people. A huge buffet has been constructed. After the meal I have paid attention, that behind a fence with which the territory has been fenced, have crowded about 60 young black people, they tried at least with half an eye to look at what was going on inside. I have asked the organizer of the party, who where this people, and he has answered, that they are natives, aboriginals of Australia. It is forbidden to them to participate in this party.

Too bad that he told this to me - he did not know, with whom he was messing. I have approached to the fence, have opened the gate and taken by hand a girl that was about 10 years old. She has timidly receded back, but I have simply pulled her inside. The others have followed us. I have lead them to buffet and have invited to have a meal, while the white visitors have risen from the tables and observed it, without believing there eyes. To cheer everybody up, I have taken care of that everybody danced to our music, and after a while natives and white had a perfectly good time together. So I imagined a holiday in Australia.

Next day in newspapers some journalists criticized my behaviour, but I have not allowed this to spoil the mood to myself. If I always would listen to the press, my boys would not achieve even one decimal fraction of what they achieved. I always was possessed by the idea, to improve the life of minorities even if I was blamed for it.

In a couple of days I have received an invitation from the aboriginals to visit for me and Jackson 5. I was curious, and I have told about it to several people in hotel, but they did not advise me to accept the invitation. It would be too dangerous to children and Rose, the white teacher whom has employed Motown. Nonsense, I have thought and have gone to the aboriginals.

We have gone in to the bushes together with all accompanying personnel, about 20 people, and I have to say, it was wonderful event.

Aboriginals have surrounded us, touched us and hugged us. They have brought us exotic fruit and have treated us with meat which they have fried in the earthen furnace. I seldom managed to try something more refined. All of us got sad when there came the time to say goodbye. I anyway had the time to ask them, from where did they found out about Jackson 5. With laughter they said: Jacksons are very famous here in the bush, we knew that you'll come here long before you arrived here."

In Australia we gave concerts in 5 cities: Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide and Sydney. Michael's song "Ben" already was ? 1 in the States and in England. Aussies loved this song too, and public went crazy every time Michael sang it. Since then we visited Australia some more times and have got acquainted there with great people. And the aboriginals have remained our true fans.
